King Salmon (aka Chinook)The King Salmon is the most sought after Lake Michigan species. People travel all over the continent to find these great fighters but nowhere else has the action, quantity and length of fishing season that we have. Whether you are Charter Fishing out of Montrose Harbor Chicago or in Northpoint Marina, Winthrop Harbor, IL. Kings are around and plentiful.
This species is caught year round however there are better times than others to target Kings, especially big 4-year old fish. The Chinook Salmon or King as we call it has a life span of only 4-years but that is not relative when it comes to its size. The King is the largest Salmon and the fastest growing fish in Lake Michigan. The mature adult 4-year Kings typically weigh between 18 and 30 pounds. They are truly the best fighting fish on the lake these freight trains can have screaming drag runs of 200 yards to 300 yards common. Two year old and 3 year old fish also provide great action. The best time for the 4-year fish is generally between the end of July and the middle of September. The smaller 2 & 3-year fish are generally active between late July & Late October. These fish truly make for a memorable trip.
